Nursing Mothers
“Mother’s Milk” Gallery

I am currently photographing a series of portraits documenting nursing mothers to promote extended breast feeding here in our American culture. It is my attempt to capture a large variety of nursing mothers from all different socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities and ages as well as varying ages of babies. I have started with the women in the area where I currently live, which is Los Angeles. All of the portraits have been taken in the homes of the mothers and only natural available light has been used.

When I photograph a mother nursing her baby I am trying to capture the intimate nature and bond between mother and baby. When people view these images I want them to feel they are getting a small glimpse into this amazing relationship that doesn’t have to end when the baby is no longer a newborn. These portraits show the ever changing relationship of nursing as baby gets older and begins to move, talk, development motor skills, and walk. I have photographed a mother with twins as well as a mother who is nursing 2 different aged children at the same time.
With these images I want show my audience just how beautiful a nursing mother is. This series shows newborns, infants, and toddlers suckling their Mothers and how precious and special that time is between and a Mother and her child. I would like these images to portray how fleeting this time of nursing is and how it shouldn’t be discarded lightly or hidden in shame.
